Alice answers the "Do's and Don'ts" of wedding guest dressing

Share

As a wedding guest, you want to find something to feel amazing in, comfortable speaking to a whole host of people you haven’t seen in a few years; something that doesn’t make you body-conscious or restricted. Confetti-throwing, bouquet-catching, drinking a flute of sparkling wine, dancing until the early hours — weddings put outfits through their paces and a full range of motion is imperative.

We spoke to Alice for her expert insight into how to nail your wedding guest outfit.

Alice, can I wear the same dress to two weddings?

Thankfully rewearing isn’t the faux pas it once was —the impact of one-event buy, on the environment and your bank account, just isn’t worth it. It may feel underwhelming to wear the exact same thing to weddings with crossover congregation — but if there’s no guest list overlap and you pair it with statement accessories, like chandelier earrings or a choker, it’s not a problem. Or perhaps a few years have passed since you've worn that last outfit and it needs a little tweaking, then why not use our alterations service SOJO to get that garment sparkling again.

Can I wear black to a wedding?

Unless the invite specifies ‘black tie’ or you know the couple closely, or it is a less conventional wedding like our Real Bride Jenn below, it’s best to avoid. Ask yourself — why would you want to when there are so many more celebratory shades? If you really want to go for black, why not wear a print like our Cleo Gown or Emperor Gown to add a splash of colour.

What should I wear as Mother of the Bride?

As the mother of the bride, selecting an ensemble that exudes elegance and compliments the wedding’s aesthetic is essential. Opt for a colour palette that harmonise with the wedding, perhaps the flowers or bridesmaids dresses but keep in mind as Mum, you might have any manner of tasks ahead so make sure you're comfortable. Our Cleo Jumpsuit could be just the thing and with handy pockets to carry paracetamol and plasters. Or opt for our pale pink Larisa Jumpsuit to run around in all day.

Can I wear white to a wedding?

If in doubt, no — and that applies to ecru, cream, off-white. You can ask if it’s ok, particularly if the bride is wearing something colourful or other than white like our Real Bride Carys below. But, colourphobes, it’s time to be brave. Just think how much more joyous the wedding pictures will be. Opt for pastel shades like silver and rosewater tones available in our Nina Sleeved Gown or Nina Gown.

Zero time to try on outfits, how do I decide what to wear?

Being a Mum and running a business, I understand that time is precious and scarce, and for some picking outfits for that special day can be stressful and confusing so I would suggest taking advantage of our Harper Concierge service. Simply pop a bunch of dresses in your basket, get it delivered to your door and Harper's excellent stylists are there to help (should you wish) you choose the right dress for you. Pay for what you like and whatever you don't choose Harper will deal with the faff of returning it back to us, win win.
